Stellenbeschreibung
The Cooperative Autonomous Systems (CAS) group at AIFB, KIT is looking for a student assistant
to support the development of a mobile robot platform from scratch. The work is hands-on and combines
embedded programming, sensor integration, robot electronics, mechanical assembly, and field testing.
Depending on your skills and the project status, your tasks may include:
• Building the robot stack with Raspberry Pi, Arduino, motor controllers, cameras, IMUs, RTK-GPS
modules such as LC29H, and LiDAR sensors such as T-Mini Plus 12;
• Integrating sensors and actuators using UART, I2C, GPIO, USB, and TCP/UDP communication;
• Connecting two Raspberry Pi boards through a local network to exchange sensor data, robot state, control
commands, or logs;
• Writing Python code on Linux for motor control, sensor reading, data logging, synchronization, and test
scripts;
• Wiring and assembling the robot hardware, including connectors, power distribution, simple interface
circuits, sensor mounts, and cable management;
• Supporting indoor and outdoor field tests, identifying hardware/software issues, documenting problems,
and improving the system after experiments;
• Optionally designing or adapting 3D-printed parts for sensor holders, board mounts, covers, or mechanical
interfaces.Required Skills:
You should have practical experience or strong hands-on motivation in:
• Python and confident use of Linux;
• Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or similar embedded platforms;
• Basic robot electronics, including voltage levels, grounding, power supply, wiring, and connectors;
• Communication interfaces such as UART, I2C, TCP/UDP, USB, and GPIO.
Experience with ROS/ROS2, Git, CAD tools, 3D printing, LiDAR point clouds, camera calibration, GPS/RTK-
GPS, IMUs, or outdoor robot experiments is a plus.What We Offer:
• Work on a real mobile robot platform instead of only simulations;
• Access to modern robotic hardware, including RTK-GPS devices, IMUs, LiDAR sensors, cameras, motor
controllers, and single-board computers;
• The possibility to contribute to the full robot pipeline from wiring and embedded software to sensor
integration and field testing;
• Flexible working hours, a friendly lab environment, air conditioning, and a coffee machine;
• Possible long-term contract if the collaboration works well.Application
